Who is This?
This is Ed Syvinski and Tammy Burnham. Tammy is Wood Island Lighthouse Keeper Laurier and wife Lily Burnham's daughter. On November 29th, 1960, Ed, with the help of Raymond Bill (both coastguard seamen stationed at Fletcher's Neck Coast Guards Station), rescued Tammy from certain death in the stormy seas around Wood Island. Here he is visiting her in the hospital several days after her rescue. Read the story on our History Page. |
Summer Tours Over 950 visitors learned about Wood Island Light by taking our tours aboard Lightrunner this summer. 25 volunteers made these tours possible. People from 27 states and 5 countries toured the lighthouse. Our new phone reservation system was a success. Fall Work Day Lighthouse receives upgrades and repairs on our Fall Work Day thanks to the 17 volunteers who came. Also a group of 14 kayakers, students from UNE, toured the lighthouse. They saw us working and wanted to help so they carried a good deal of debris off the island. NEW BULKHEAD WELL COVER REHAB

Biddeford 8th Grade comes to Biddeford Pool and learns about Wood Island Light. Their trip included a visit to the island as well as to East Point where they learned about sea birds and the heroics of Eben Emerson. Thanks to Barbara Fortier and her entire 8th grade team, the kids had an educational and rewarding day. |
Maine's Coast Week Cleanup FOWIL participated in this event for the first time this year. All debris picked up was cataloged and sent to the state. Most debris collected on Wood Island was related to the Lobstering industry plus a whole lot of plastic beverage containers.
