Who is This?

George Woodward

Wood Island Keeper 1927-1934.

Here he is probably lighting a fourth order lamp at one of the several lighthouse at which he kept the light.

Raising the Flag at the Lighthouse - 2006

The Spring Work Day Crew takes time out to raise the flag for this season. The flag was the coffin flag of Laurier Burnham who kept the Wood Island light 1959-1963. He lived on the island with his wife Lily and two daughters Tammy and Holly. The family felt that it was appropriate for this flag to fly at the lighthouse which Laurier loved until it can no longer fly as a symbol of our country.

Thank you to the Burnham family.

WEBCAM

Sean Murphy installs the new webcam, provided by GOMOOS, at Wood Island on Spring Work Day. Tricky to say the least up that tall flag pole. Check out the webcam here. Unfortunately, not all computers and servers will allow access to the webcam. GOMOOS has contracted with FOWIL in order to set up two antennas on the island. Read the story here.

LOGO

The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse are happy to introduce their new logo created by Anne Bassett, a loyal volunteer of many FOWIL projects. It is thanks to Anne's expertise in the area of computer graphics and design that we now have a fine logo. We may soon have merchandise available such as shirts, hats, belts etc. In charge of this new merchandising area is Maureen Sullivan who has donated her expertise in order that FOWIL can offer some products for friends and acquaintances to buy. All of this will, of course, will benefit the lighthouse reconstruction.

Thank you Anne!!

Spring Work Day

Small but mighty crew who completed several projects.

Wood Chucks

The Wood Chucks have a new leader in Steve Sullivan affectionately referred to as "Woody." He kindly stepped up to the plate to run this small group of folks who go out to Wood Island on Tuesdays 9-12 to mow, weed-whack, chop, rake, water and do small repairs.

Oh yes, we enjoy the fabulous view and fantastic environs as well!

If you know that you are missing out and want to jump onboard, contact Steve@woodislandlighthose.org

Jack Moore, Rick Koehler, Sean Murphy, John Sciaba and Frank Wolcott repaired the very bottom of the boat ramp. This part of the ramp is under water more often than not. Sean says that it is now in A#1 condition after two years of work.

The Mooring was also repaired. The Hay field at the lighthouse, was brought back into lawn condition by two hardy souls, Sandy Wolcott and Steve Sullivan - how many hours of mowing was that?  Walter Fowski was a plumber for the day as well as sign installer. Shirley Stallings and Sheri Poftak installed the displays and cleaned up the interior then went out and helped in the yard. Frank Wolcott found time to plant daylilies in all the gardens. Thanks to all who worked so hard!
