From the Executive Committee The summer '06 season got officially underway this past Saturday with a General Membership meeting at the Biddeford Pool Fire Barn. An incumbent slate of EC members was elected to new two-year terms. Sheri Poftak gave a terrific presentation on the evolution of the lighthouse light covering such things as "Spider Lamps," Fresnel lenses and aero beacons and the history of their operation at Wood Island. Our submission for the installation of the tower stairs railing is pending before the State Historic Preservatioon Commission and the Coast Guard. We hope to have their authorization to proceed with the work in thirty days and that work will commence soon thereafter. The submission was prepared by Dave Curran, our architect, in collaboration with stone expert, Scott Whitaker. We depend so much on the professional talents and generosity of people like Dave and Scott, so we want publicly to applaud and thank them for their work on our behalf. In only 8 months we raised the required matching funds to earn a generous grant from the Biddeford Pool Association. We want also to acknowledge the Association's generosity and to express our sincere thanks. We are pleased that a new webcam is now available and ready for installation at the lighthouse. We will let you know when it is viewable on our website. With this beginning, we are confident that we are headed into a successful and exciting 3rd summer season. |

Outreach Outreach is busy. Thanks to Diane Noble and Kathleen White, FOWIL is the first chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation to display information about their lighthouse at the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland Maine. The display was especially created for the Grand Opening & Dedication of the Kenneth Black Exhibition Hall at the Maine Lighthouse Museum on June 17th.
This Museum is a must see! |

Brad Coupe represents FOWIL Tom Goulding invites FOWIL to make a presentation to the Saco Bay Trails organization recently at the Dyer Library. Brad Coupe entertains and informs the group about the "trail" to and on Wood Island leading to the wonderful lighthouse there. All are glad to hear about FOWIL's efforts towards restoring this special place and look forward to a trip to the island to learn more. |
