A guided tour to Wood Island Lighthouse is run by the Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse, an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The lighthouse is located off the coast of Biddeford Maine and tours leave from Vine’s Landing in Biddeford Pool. The guided tour takes about 1 1/2 hours and is subject to Mother Nature and her weather and sea conditions.

When are the tours?
The tours are held in July and August, check back in the Spring to find out which days our tours will operate.

Is the tower open on the tours?
Yes, the tower is open to those who wish to make the climb to the top, though only those who are 12 years old and older are allowed up.  The tower received a set of double handrails in 2008, making the journey to the top safe for lighthouse guests. Those who wish to access the tower, must read and follow the Tower Rules.

How do I get on a tour?
Advanced reservations are required for all of our lighthouse tours. Reservations may be made online only through this website starting in June, 2017 and will continue through July and August.

To find out how to make an Online Reservation go to the drop down menu under Tours and click on “Make a Reservation.” Complete information is found here please read it carefully.

Questions may be directed to our Phone Information Line 207-200-4552. This line is staffed entirely by volunteers, please leave your name and number and someone will call you back.

Is there a charge for the tour?
There is no charge or admission for our tours. Rather, we appeal to our guests for donations by passing the hat on the tour and hope that you will agree that our suggested donation – $15 per person and $8 for children – is a great value for you and your family. We depend on your generosity and enthusiasm for the work we are doing to restore the lighthouse, archive its history and make it accessible for you and others in the future.

May my group schedule a special tour?
Based on volunteer availability, we are occasionally able to provide groups with special tours to the island in July and August. In the past this has included senior groups, community groups, or family trips. During the busy summer months, we may add additional tours on scheduled tour days if there is a demand and FOWIL volunteers available.
