A guided tour to Wood Island Lighthouse is run by the Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse, an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The lighthouse is located off the coast of Biddeford Maine and tours leave from Vine’s Boat Landing in Biddeford Pool. The guided tour takes about 1 3/4 hours and is subject to Mother Nature and her weather and sea conditions.
When are the tours?
The tours are held in July, August, and on Maine Lighthouse Day in September. Check the reservation page for tour dates and times.
Is the tower open on the tours?
Yes, the tower is open to those who wish to make the climb to the top, though only those who are 10 years old and older are allowed up. Those who wish to access the tower, must read and follow the Tower Rules.
How do I get on a tour?
Online reservations are required for all of our lighthouse tours. Reservations may be made through this website starting on June 1st 2018. Questions may be directed to our phone information line 207-200-4552. This line is staffed entirely by volunteers, please leave your name and number and someone will call you back.
Is there a charge for the tour?
There is no charge for admission for our tours. Rather, we appeal to our guests for donations. The suggested donation is $20 per person and $10 for children. We depend on your generosity and enthusiasm for the work we are doing to restore the lighthouse, archive its history and make it accessible for you and others in the future.
May my group schedule a special tour?
Based on volunteer availability, we are occasionally able to provide groups with special tours to the island in July and August. In the past this has included senior groups, community groups, or family trips. During the busy summer months, we may add additional tours on scheduled tour days if there are FOWIL volunteers available.
