RESTORATION |
|
We are privileged to have acquired a great piece of living history. The property we have acquired from the Coast Guard includes the tower, keepers house, oil house, boathouse, walkway from the boat house to the tower and seven acres surrounding the house and tower.
The property is in need of extensive renovation and initially we are working to stabilize the structures from further deterioration. Although we are faced with a very costly renovation, it is a very exciting time because the future of this treasure is in our hands. We have choosen the early 19th century as the time period to which we will restore the buildings. Our plans, initially for the tower alone, have been approved by the Maine State Historic Preservation Commission. Work has been started on the installation of our handrail system in the tower, we anticipate that it will be completed during the summer of 2008. Our next step will be to rehab the tower by repointing and repainting it inside and outside. We were able to get the dwelling house repainted during the summer of 2007. It looks very nice with its new white coat. Wood Island Lighthouse is on the National Historic Register requiring special permits at each stage of renovation. We hope that you will want to become involved in the effort to save this very special place by becoming a member. Memberships are annual from the first of January each year.
